Close to Sweetwater Creek in southwest Cobb, Austell has a friendly, hometown atmosphere. Austell's big draw is Six Flags Over Georgia, a theme park whose rides span the thrill spectrum; from gentle carousels to twisting, turning roller coasters.
Anyone who lives in Austell has easy access to Interstates 20 and 285 as well as three major thoroughfares. Though population growth is slowing across Cobb County, Austell continues to experience some of the largest population growth in the County.
Austell is proud to say that it is the home of the Norfolk-Southern Railway John Whitaker Intermodal Facility – the largest intermodal facility east of the Mississippi River.
The area that is now Austell was frequented by game hunters and trappers on their way to the area's salt licks and claimed the area's waters had medicinal properties. It soon became a destination for therapeutic healing, leading to the founding of a town known as Salt Springs. Georgia Pacific chose the town of Austell to be a station depot, being the dividing point for the major Birmingham and Chattanooga railway lines.
Austell is located along the southern border of Cobb County with a smaller portion extending south into Douglas County. It is bordered by Lithia Springs, Mableton and Powder Springs.
